To give you an idea of what free operating systems are out there, look at www.freeos.com. These operating systems range from CP/M and FreeDOS to Linux and Solaris 8 (Solaris 9 is not free). But, there are many more operating systems out there than are listed on freeos.com. There are hundreds of Linux versions for just about every purpose and computer system. There are several free DOS projects. Some old operating systems that are now discontinued and unsupported are sitting on an FTP server somewhere. Many free operatings systems are Unix derivative, like NetBSD and Solaris 8.

One word of warning though. Some of these projects offers installation CDs at a nominal fee and do not offer free CD images for you to burn yourself, though you can download the operating system's executable files off the internet. Usually the fee is no more than $20. The catch is that installing the operating system without the CD may be more hassle than it is worth, so if you really want to install the operating system, you are, in essence, forced to buy the CD anyway.
