Black tea can cause constipation in some individuals (particularly if they eat little fiber in their diet). Why? Black tea has astringent properties, causing water to be pulled out of the bowel. This creates hard(er) stools to pass.
Sweetening tea with sugar can cause the opposite effect, especially on an empty stomach. Why? Because a rush of a high concentration of sugar can cause an osmotic pull of water INTO the colon - thus sending you to the bathroom pronto. Orange jc. on an empty stomach (or any high concentration of sugar) will do the same thing.
Caffeine in tea can stimulate a bowel response, as well.
The tannins in tea bind iron in foods you eat making it less available to be absorbed by your body., so if you are anemic - it may be wise to watch how much (especially black) tea you drink.
