The difference between MP3 and MPEG-4 is that the MPEG4 allows for the compression of video but the MP3 does not.

Edit - MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) - Pronounced m-peg.
The term also refers to the family of digital video compression standards and file formats developed by the group. MPEG generally produces better-quality video than competing formats.

    • Alatea, The 3 from mp3 and the 4 from mpeg4 are not refering to the same thing. mp1 mp2 and mp3 are the layers from an mpeg movie file. 1 is the control layer 2 is the picture layer and 3 is the sound layer. terrestrial digital tv is currently transmitted in mpeg2 which still has these three layers as do all the other mpeg formats. Mp3 was just 'sold' separately for sound compression.
