Question

Help answer this question below.

My 87 4-runner 22R-E with 106K miles. Great shape except a slight oil leak, not much but enough to annoy me. Anyone know of common oil leaks on this model ? It would be a lot of help because after 21 years its hard to tell whats new grime. Thanks.

I had a 1990 4runner with the 22re and it was leaking from the timing cover. The timing chain needed replacing and it was loose enough that the chain broke the plastic chain guide and was hitting the side of the timing cover. This caused the seal to fail and the oil to leak. You should also check your valve cover for leaks.

If you end up changing your timing chain than search online for a good kit that has a metal guide. There is a guy that goes by engnbldr who sells timing kits on ebay. I bought my kit from him and it was a really good value.

    • Thanks Rusty for your input. I'll take a look at the timing cover and get back to you. Thanks again because I was a little lost.
