Yes I am ... How did you know? Don't look for it anytime soon, I've been at it for awhile. I don't get the kind of time I'd like to work on it, so it'll be some time yet, before I start getting and ignoring, rejection notices. Even if it doesn't get published, the experience will be well worth the effort ... yeah, right! lol

    • Whether you get published or not i still see writing a book as an achievement, and yes, definately an experience be it good or bad!

    • Thanks lippy, I will keep at it. By the way, its a novel ... a thriller, and purely fiction.

    • How'd you learn so much about writing anyways? Just extremely observant??

    • I don't know that I do, but I'm one of those people that analyzes everything (probably too much sometimes) So even when I'm reading a story, I'm trying to get into the author's head... finding methods that I like and want to accomplish, and problems that I want to avoid. (like when I go nuts with commas) In reading Cornwell's book, I noticed she has the same problem (in my opinion) In Poe's day, that was fine.. but I think modern writing needs to flow a little easier. There's a lot more to distract a reader these days, so I don't think really long complex sentences work as well anymore.

    • So I guess I'm just trying to identify, and mimic, what the current successful people are doing. It's nice of you to say what you did, but I'm just learning as I go... playing by ear. Hopefully with enough rewrites, I'll have something fun to read.

    • You certainly have this ability to learn through unconventional sources. I'm totally amazed at your painting abilities without any formal training. And you don't have a need to ask for advice about how to structure your book --- you go ahead and do it. (Maybe your new nickname should be 'Nike.') Where did your confidence come from to not only attack creative problems that need a resolution but to know how to go about it, as well? Your mother's or father's side? (...I guess I'm just 'full of questions' tonight!...) ':)

    • It's probably more like stubbornness than confidence... I figure with enough trial and error, I'm bound to stumble across something that works. That's always been fun for me. I've just always been more comfortable learning in my own way.. and when I wanted to learn. My Dad was the chief engineer for a corp.... maybe that's where the analytical streak came from. I'll probably never really excel at anything, but I'll have tested a variety of interesting things.

    • A real 'investigative mindset' in your family --- what were dinner conversations like? Must have been fascinating... :)

    • We never really had much in the way of serious discussions at the table. They usually centered around our activities of the day and what's coming up.... how gymnastics went, or did my sister practice with her accordion. That was probably by design.. better for the digestion to keep things light.

    • Oh! Was her playing THAT bad? You must have mentioned her, but older or younger sister? (?)

    • Ha! No, she was actually pretty good; traveled around the country a bit doing recitals... just no serious discussions at the table. :)

    • (Again, I somehow hadn't realized you'd put anything down here... )

Those family meals. On occasion, my mother would leave instructions for me to make supper. I'd look all over the kitchen for the ingredients and would never find them. Then in frustration, I'd finally see a little stack of those same ingredients in a spot visible enough right on the counter top nearby.

This would happen over & over again & still happens to me today, if someone asks me to do something & puts the things together for me. ':) Go figure...!

    • It's weird how that can happen. I have a lantern that my dad and I would use fishing. I needed it for something, so I looked where I thought I'd put it.... nope, not there. I looked all over the house and finally, after checking that spot one more time, gave up for the night. Several months later I passed by that spot... and there it was... Hmmmmm. =0[]

      Kravenhead

by Kravenhead on October 15th, 2009

    • Yeah, but if you're not the only one living in the house, your Dad could potentially have had it elsewhere & then returned it to that spot, n'est pas? (Why do I suspect you're not convinced with that line! lol!!)

So you went fishing with your Dad? What great memories to have! Any especially memorable fishing trips? (And what's the largest fish you've ever caught, by the way...?) :D

      Trissinger

by Trissinger on October 18th, 2009

    • Yes... I am the only one living in the house... it's just one of those things.. no connotation.

All my fishing expeditions with my dad were memorable... especially when he handed me the knife and explained, that (the fish) had to be "cleaned". I knew that he sensed my apprehention... my fear... my reluctance to sever the head, split the belly and pull out the entrails.

There was no satisfactory explanation for what I was doing.. only that, if I were to take them, there had to be purpose... food, and no other.

    • Ah, I'd misunderstood the lantern occurrence --- I'd thought you'd meant that happened with the lantern when you still lived at home with your parents, at a young age. "Alles klar!" :) ("All clear!" --- Though not really, for how DID that lantern mysteriously reappear?? Are you going to use any devices like that in the book, K?)

Had your Dad fished since he was a young lad? (I'm guessing yes.) And your Dad taught you to not kill animals or fish merely for pleasure's sake, then, but also because of the food they provided. (Do you still vividly recall that first time you killed that fish? Maybe you can even picture the moment.)

    • Yeah, Greg will be making a fairly mysterious appearance... for better or worse..Can't give away too much). :)

I do remember the moment. We had dug up our own worms for bait, and when we came in from fishing it was getting dark. There was a fish cleaning house that was dark except for the lantern. It was a little like a large outhouse; a cutting counter had holes to push the "waste material" through, and the place was abuzz with flies.. It was a little spooky for a little shaver like myself.

    • Man, I was like "Little Miss 21 Questions" above, wasn't I? (As I ask another question...) You named your lantern Greg. :) :)

"...a little shaver like myself" --- Did you create that expression? Got a few 'little shavers' of my own... generally very kind, but boy, with lots of 'baggage.' (It can be tough when you see little ones holding so much pain --- I really feel for them. Well, that's all about that for now --- takes getting used to, when an idea's new to one, eh?)

    • Ha! No the lantern doesn't have a name, and I know where it is... I think. You'll have to tell me more about your Shavers..
