Question

Help answer this question below.

My 12yo is terrified of tampons. Any suggestions for helping her? We tried over the weekend and she cried for 15 miuntes after just trying the tip. It is hard for me to understand the pain as I lost my virginity at 12. Do most girls wait to use them?

I am quite upset at what you have written.

You have written 'we tried'. Oh my god, trying a tampon for the first time is a very private thing that she should do on her own - not with you there with her. Having you there probably made her very tense and nervous so of course it would be a lot more difficult.

I think that 12 is a very young age to be trying to make a child use these. My mum bought me pads and told me about tampons but told me that they were there for me to try in a few years time and when 'I' wanted to.

Give the poor girl some space and stop pressuring her into doing something thats she doesn't want to do and is clearly not ready for.

    • What makes you think I pressured her? She asked me if she could use one.

    • because the first thing that you stated was that she is terrified of them, that would lead me to believe that it is not her desire to use them.

    • Now that she tried one, she is terrified to try again and I wanted to know if this was normal.

    • Of course it's normal. If you tried something that terrified & upset you, would you be eager to try it again straight away?
      .
Just give her some time and space and when she is ready she may want to try again. Tampons don't suit everybody. there are a lot of people who either can't use them or just chose not to.

    • I wondered if anybody had this experience with tampons when they were younger and how long it usually took to try again. It has been 2 years and she has no interest. We don't even talk about it. If she chooses to try again, she can. It has nothing to do with me.

    • Exactly - it has nothing to do with you me or anyone else other than her.

    • When I was 12, my mom helped me try to get a tampon in, I did not get it. I presently use them at the age of 37.
