I have an old issue of Modern Bride which mentions in an article that an "average engagement" lasts one or two years. (That's a pretty wide scale for an average!) The Knot.com suggests in several places that one year is pretty standard (such as here: http://www.theknot.com/ch_article.html?Object=AI990614152834&keywordID=167&keywordType=2&parentID=533). As a bride-to-be myself, I can tell you that most bridal magazines, wedding planning books, and wedding websites suggest one year as the normal amount of time you should allow yourself for planning your wedding.

I would suggest however that if a couple has been together a long time, a brief engagement is not out of order. If, on the other hand, a couple has been together for a short time, they may want to be engaged for longer so that they can get to know each other better.
