Based on the data available here:

    http://www.em-dat.net/disasters/Visualisation/emdat_display_list.php

There have been 5584 disasters in the last 7 years = 798 per year.

In the decade previous (1990-1999)this site indicates 4752 in 10 years or 475 per year.

The decade before that was 2798 in 10 years or 280 per year.

Doesn't directly answer your question but may be useful to the discussion. Im sure part of it is a changing definition of disaster over the years!

You can query the database from this page:
    http://www.em-dat.net/disasters/list.php
