The person also has to be within your own culture. I moved to the former Soviet Union after it collapsed. I usually couldn't read the locals' body language, and they usually couldn't read mine. One especially painful memory: I have some arthritis in my right hand and was all ready to erupt over the nearly crippling grips I'd get at Rotary Club--sometimes I couldn't type for three days. Fortunately I vented with a peer before saying anything, and HE said that a really strong handshake is not someone showing off his macho, but expressing respect.
