    The previous answer is absolute twaddle. The bombing campaign was not controversial until after the war.
    RAF Bomber command crew received 13 Victoria Crosses 2 to 617 squadron--"The Dambusters".
    Two of the most famous were Leonard Cheshire VC and Guy Gibson VC.
    No 7 Squadron alone had 580 major decorations.
    The main awards were the DFC Distinguished Flying Cross for Officers and the DFM, Distinguished Flying Medal, for non-coms. Some aircrew also received decorations from allied countries such as Holland, France, Norway, Poland and the US
