Lately I hear tiny beep when I try to access the HD. It doesn't access. I try again and it does. The screen freezes up or the cursor stops.

No they wouldn't. Besides, I don't care if they spy on me. I have nothing to hide, and they don't know me so there is nothing to be embarassed about.
