You're reading Should the US government legalize prostitution?

well i think the woman out on the corners wont go away. They are $10 hookers for a reason. They are drug addicts and no one would pay them more than $10 so as far as that goes I dont think that would go away. I do however think it should be legalized.

My only concern about legalizing prostitution would be that women might then be pressured into a job they detest if they are unable to find safer, healthier, and more rewarding ways to pay the bills. We should not make women (or men, but male prostitutes are much less common) choose between turning tricks or not having heat during the winter.

If the women who work in the trade think the job of prostitute is great, and they would do it even without undue pressure from threatened eviction, malnutrition ... then they should be able to "work" in this particular service.

you know what's ironic about the pimps though? a lot of countries that have legalized prostitution have legalized pimping as well, usually because idealistically pimping could be a good thing. I don't personally think it is, (I'm a pragmatist, and from what is evidenced in the world, the relationship of a pimp to a prostitute is almost always abused) I think all women should strive to take care of themselves physically as much as possible and be wholly independent of men despite some of men's physical advantages; however, i do understand how a pimp could legitimately function as a sort of "agent" to a woman (or a man, and yeah, i'm thinking of hung) who wants to be a prostitute or increase his/her clientele.
