Question

Help answer this question below.

Does anyone know who the Buddhist deity representation is with the face splitting in half to reveal a new one coming from beneath it? I saw it in a museum of antiquities in Japan and cannot find a name.

I believe this is what you are looking for. This is the text from the webpage I found the link on.
"The statue of Priest Hoshi makes reference to his extraordinary human nature. As can be seen through the split face, his true inner body is that of the eleven- headed Kannon, god of mercy."

And "The Priest Hoshi with an Emerging Bodhisattva" So what you saw is not a deity, it is a priest with a Bodhisattva emerging.

    What is Bodhisattva?
In Tibetan Buddhism, a Bodhisattva is anyone who is motivated by compassion and seeks enlightenment not only for him/herself but also for everyone...

    Hope this helps

    • Spin, this answer has made my week. I was so enthralled with the figure that I have a picture of it hanging on my wall, and I have been trying to do research on it but keep running into obstacles. Thank you so much.
