My grandmother always use to say "It's not the dead that will hurt you...it's the living" to calm my fears of ghosts. What did your parents say to assure you when you were afraid of the boogeyman?

I used to run and hide whenever the "rag man" with his horse and wagon would come down our street because my older brothers and sisters told me he was the "boogeyman". My parents weren't much help to me when it came to alleviating my fears because they had their hands full with six kids. I learned that the rag man was a very kind, nice man when I overheard him talk to the other kids on my street. Eventually, I started to talk to him myself and any fears that I had quickly dissipated.
