My ongoing nightmare is with Sprint PCS -- they're customer service is atrocious. They made a billing mistake 2 months ago that took 4 lengthy phone calls to get corrected. One operator had the nerve to tell me they were "willing to split the cost of the mistake with me" -- THEIR mistake!

I finally got that fixed, the next month they charged me an extra $125 for unspecified data services (a very small amount of time using my phone as a web browser -- BIG mistake). Now they're insisting these charges are legitimate but can't specify what they're for exactly.

Oddly, I've been thinking of switching to Verizon as a solution, even though Sprint will charge me a ton of money to get out of my contract. With your story, now I'm thinking I may just have to give in and let them charge me whatever they feel like each month. :(

    • When I had Sprint, not a single month went by that I didn't have to call them to get a problem corrected. And every call ended with "Would you like to hear about a special offer...?" Not unless it involves switching companies, thanks.

    • I'm sure glad I asked the question, then, if only to save you from Verizon "competence"! We moved from Riverside mid-November and had AT&T there, with which I was very satisfied..we have no AT&T here, at least not in the part of Hemet in which we live..we have Time-Warner Cable and was thinking of getting everything bundled through them..we have DSL and phone with Verizon..when they told me about the $79 cancellation fee I was livid! I obviously expected they would inform me about everything at the time I ordered the service..wrong! You have to be astute enough to ask all the right questions..I'd record the conversation, and get name, rank and serial number of the person with whom you speak! Thanks for your answer and good luck! :)

    • Rosie, I'm going through basically that exact situation right now. I switched over to the Time Warner Triple Play (bundle). They told me they'd take care of everything with Verizon, where I had my phone and DSL. Now I'm looking at a bill from Verizon for a $79 early (DSL) termination fee and part of a month of phone service because they said I, not Time Warner had to be the one to cancel the phone service!! I'm debating whether to pay the bill or not.

    • I love to share tons of stuff with my friends..I would not have chosen to share this kinda irritation with you, gt! :( Even if you were the one to cancel, unless you've been with them for the one-year contract, my understanding is that you owe the $79! Did you know that from the get-go? These companies should be ashamed of themselves..but, hey, as long as the 'ka-ching of the cash register keeps going on in the background, they really don't care! How do you like the Time-Warner bundle? I have the DSL/phone with verizon and the cable package with Time Warner. I'm giving what I have now another month or two..if they keep screwing up and nothing gets better, we're gonna bite the da** bullet, pay the $79 and get the heck out of dodge..but I don't want to drop one incompetent service provider for another one! :(

    • We've been fine with Time-Warner (only Cable game in town where we live) even though Scott was happier with the Comcast he had in Pennsylvania. I had the DSL/phone and no cable, but when Scott moved in, we went ahead and switched to the Triple Play with Time Warner. I have a feeling when I signed up for Verizon DSL over the phone, they probably talked about the $79 fee in their long winded spiel somewhere. I know that I didn't sign anything to that effect. That's why I hesitate about paying- they're really cleaning up with that stuff!! Anyway, if you do switch your phone service over to Time Warner, MAKE SURE you contact Verizon directly to let them know!! Or else you'll be charged for phone service on both ends in addition to that pesky $79 like I am right now!!

    • Again though, we've had no problems with Time Warner Triple Play. Bundle very convenient. One bill. Bill preview comes in over the net and of course you can pay it that way too. Sometimes hard to get a rep on the phone, but anytime we've contacted them, they've been very courteous and helpful.

    • Well I think I have a cleaner case here -- somewhere in the 4 pages of fine print I signed, it probably did say something like "data costs $0.03/kb", but there was certainly nothing up-front about it. And how can a little reading the news cost $125?! Well... I want them to itemize it. But they can't -- apparently it's important enough to bill for, but not important enough to keep track of :)

I wrote a letter to Sprint complaining, I've not heard back. My next step will probably be a recorded phone call, then letters to the California Public Utilities Commission, etc. At some point I'd really like to see something worthwhile happen here. They just rape people with absolutely no advance warning -- I'd at least like them to buy me dinner first.

    • Go for it, by all means!! I think they count on the fact that people will just give up if they keep bullying them;)
