My car needs new tie rods. I've never heard of these before. Are they generally expensive for an American-made car?

    They are not very expensive no. Just forged pieces of steel. If you have a domestic then they are plentiful and should be easy to find. Labour may get you but that can vary by location. They are very important pieces but not very expensive.
