My car needs new tie rods. I've never heard of these before. Are they generally expensive for an American-made car?

My daughter just had an accident and her tie rods snapped in two! Apparently this is rare, but could cause one to lose control - not so good. I believe she had them replaced for under $200.00 including parts and labor. Good luck.
