It is possible in most cases, but you will need to find out what motherboard you have. Your motherboard, the big circuitboard that everything plugs into, should have a brand name and a model number on it, like Abit BX-7 for example. This will allow you to look at the website of the manufacturer (Abit in this example) and then find the manual for that specific motherboard (the BX-7), where you should be able to find what processors the motherboard supports. You may also be able to call the motherboard's manufacturer directly to find out. If it's a pre-built system like a Dell or Compaq, you can call them directly to find out.

Once you find out what it supports, you can then swap the processor out for your new one. In most cases, this is a pretty easy process. Usually the motherboard manual will describe how to install a processor in great detail. The exact installation methods vary by processor type and if you have a heatsink or not, but most aren't very hard. The most important thing to do is make sure it's aligned the correct way and that once it's in, it's locked down into position tightly.
