Question

Help answer this question below.

"Marriage" is the religious union between one man and one woman. Why the need to use the same term to join same sex couples? Why is calling these unions "domestic partnerships" offensive if allowing these couples the same legal rights as married couples?

There are no "domestic partnerships" that give the same rights as marriage (over 1000 rights at last count).

The Constitution is supposed to guarantee equal rights for all citizens. Since marriage is a legal (state) right, not giving the same rights to all is discrimination, plain and simple.

If a term is good enough for one segment of the population, it is good enough for all of them - of course, when rights are equalized. Either we all get to use "marriage," or no one does. 'Separate but Equal' is always separate and never equal - and should not be acceptable by anyone that supports the Constitution.

    • Marriage is a religious right accepted by governments. Separation of church and state is a myth. In my opinion and the opinions of many many others, domestic partnerships should give the same rights as marriage, but not be called the same thing.

    • Separation of church and state is not a myth, but one of the principles upon which this country was founded.
If people are given equal rights, what possible excuse could one find for reserving one particular term for a "special" class of people?

    • is everything a myth to you? you're entitled to your opinion, of course. however, just as many other laws that legally discriminated against women and racial minorities have been seen to be unfair, so will this one eventually. other countries are granting this right it's citizens, and the U.S. will one day follow.

    • Actually "separation of church and state" is a misnomer, a more accurate constitutional title is "separation of state from church"
