It is an illustration of the concept of free will.

From the beginning, it was helpful to have a story that allowed us to explain the separation from GOD.

It also had a subtext of women being the temptress of man. The beginnings of a chauvinistic rationale.

Without free will, we would be no more than pets.

    • God has a plan even before he created the earth, he created it for all of us.He had his reasons why he placed the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden.He knew that man will eventually eat the forbidden fruit and that is why he ordained a Savior even before the foundation of the world(1 Pet 1:19-20).Assuming Adam nor Eve did not partake of the fruit, one of their children or descendants would certainly or possibly partake of the fruit. Also, why did'nt God put cherubims to guard the forbidden tree?just like what he did with the Tree of Life after they partook of forbidden fruit?
