If I tried to answer on what a power chord was, I would probably answer incorrectly. So I found a source that said it better than me. I found the following best fit quote at http://www.guitarsite.com/newsletters/020909/3.shtml on Saturday, Nov. 8 2003. It somewhat clarifys what a powerchord is.

"A powerchord is a chord which contains no 3rd (suspended chords, and chords containing 3 or more notes exempted). Technically, a powerchord is not really a true "chord" because, by definition, a "chord" has to have a minumum of 3 notes. Powerchords are also called "5" chords, notated as C 5."
