What is at the root of intolerance in some people?

I don't mean racism in this instance. I mean how some people cannot tolerate the simple things. They don't have patience for others, don't have patience in certain situations. They are perpetually wound up or get easily annoyed or angered. What is this character disease? What lies at the root? How can it change?

    ego and no rejection tolerance....they become defensive and self righteous...most stems from the roots of upbringing.
