Why do some people think that using "Oh my God" as an exclamation, is taking God's "name" in vain? God is not his "name". It is merely a title, which can be used for more than just "Yahweh".

Good question. I never thought of it that way. I am a Christian and I do think it's wrong to say GD, but I just don't think it's very reverent to say, "oh my god." and I try not to say it.
Some people probably think what you asked because now a-days, God is what we call Him, so to us, God is His name.
Hope that helps and is understandable.

    • It helps me understand why people do it. But I still think, that if more people thought about it, they wouldn't be restricting themselves of certain words and phrases.

    • Well, when He says not to use His name in vain and we call Him God, I don't see that as limiting, I see it as being careful.
But I do see what you are talking about. Though, it would sound wierd if someone said, "Oh my Yahweh."! LOL!

    • Haha, yes, but there are other ways to take his name in vain, other than "oh my".

    • Other than GD, what do you mean?

    • In other words, using his name in place of a curse word. Saying, "Jesus Christ, that was horrible!", would be taking his name in vain. Pardon me for saying that. I was merely giving you an example.

    • Do you mean Christians restricting themselves or the people saying those phrases?

    • Err, I'm not sure what you mean...You just said that it sounded funny to say "Oh my Yahweh!", and I was just saying you can use it in a less weird sounding way. I only meant that there are other ways to use God's name in vain, than saying "oh my" something.

    • Sorry, my fault. I was referring to your first comment

    • Oh, I mean both. People who don't think saying "oh my God" is bad, wouldn't have to feel restricted in front of people that do. And people who do think it's wrong wouldn't feel restricted not to say it in fear of sinning.

    • I guess that's one of the facts of life. Like I said before, I don't think it's a sin to say it, I just think you could say gosh or goodness instead.

    • It is proper to respect the beliefs of others, not a restriction.
