Slavery in America was becoming economically unsustainable toward the middle of the 19th century, due to advances in technology. It would have petered out on its own (but maybe not completely), if not for Lincoln (who was pretty indifferent to slaves -- his priority was to keep the country together).

Making it illegal was the proper and moral thing to do, and we're a better country for the decision. But slavery was on the downturn anyway, because it was already becoming cheaper to buy & maintain machinery than to support a community of slaves.
