Mozzarella cheese is naturally stringy. The concept of selling it like that was to make it more palletable to children. It adds an element of fun to an otherwise bland food that kids would pass on in favor of Cheez Whiz or some other food-product-from-Hell with no nutritional value whatsoever. If you remember, the old commercials touted it as "The best part of the pizza, without the pizza."
