In Death Note: How to Read he says that the numbers are part of a formula he used to keep track of the character deaths, but in the midst of the DeathNote craze, He lost the info of the formula, so every character past Light has random numbers above their heads. -Keido

The lifespan shows how long a person can live. To calculate it, you have to divide the number that appears above someone's head, then divide it with 3556 then divide again with 365 (you may need calculator). The result of those equation shows the character's age (when they died). e.g. Light's = 93312639 divide by 3556 = 26240.899 divide by 365 = 71.892 years so that means if Light have a normal life, he'll die in the age of 71

it's in some unearthly unit of time that Shinigami use, but nobody knows how to convert it for reasons explained by Keido. unknown whether it represents total lifespan or remaining lifespan.
