Haddad is a very big clan in Yemen and oldest, Yemen were predominatly Jewish and later Christians, alot of them migrated to the fertile cresent and make homes and mix with the local Christians. Although haddad means blacksmiths in Smetic language it is well known to originated from Qahtan ( Biblical Joktan) son of shems and subsequently inhabited the Highlands of Yemen ( Physically fair skin and light eyes)and followed the mass migration into the Levant and tigris. Haddad (Arabic: Øدّاد) is also a common Levantine last name, meaning "blacksmith" or "smith" in current Arabic, and is common in the Middle East. The name comes from the Canaanite god Hadad, the family name existed before the appearance of Christianity and of the Arabic language To find out what part of the Middle East your Haddads were from, you will have to work backwards and keep veryaccurate records of births, deaths and marriages. Even then, with such a common surname, you may not do too well. I know. My husband's surname is a very common one in a particular area of Italy. Becuase of this, and the use and reuse of the same first names, it is almost impossible to track our line.

There are 2 surnames often confused together in this group: HADDAD and HADAD They are both derived from the same language origins meaning loud crashing noise (the sound of a blacksmith and thunder respectively) - HADDAD does mean blacksmith but not in the sense that the common SMITH name was given purely based on occupation. In times when the common people were significantly oppressed by the ruling class the haddad/blacksmith figure in the villages; being strong, powerful and well known helped bring about much revolution and was a front line figure with the name haddad being called out in battle. - HADAD comes from the name of a God (who had a number of forms of name) this God was a supreme God responsible for many of the things paramount in the everyday lives of the people such as weather, crops, lightening and thunder, fertility, protection of life. The name was taken on by aristocracy (added to their names) to communicate their worth through forms meaning son of god; such as barhadad and benhadad (noted in the bible) later large family groups dropped the bar/ben and became HADAD. Thus you can see the 2 surnames have quite distinctly different roles in society and origins. NB there has been further confusion created through emmigration of these names where by poor record keeping has resulted in addition of Ds and subtraction of Ds and other letters. Good Luck in finding the origin of your names as it is a rewarding journey.
