  • yeah they do carry guns... it has absolutely no effect on me :S it makes me feel threatened actually, it feels like another human being is carrying a weapon and is trained to use it and WILL use it if he feels the need to again, its a human being... The Sean Bell story still boggles my mind, I can never get over these things.
  • Yes...I feel neutral...violence is a rarity where I live...in fact...everyone has guns...military, law enforcement, hunters, or just collectors...whatever floats your boat...as long as you don't kill anyone...
  • Yes, I have no feelings about whether or not it makes me feel safer. It's one of those things that just 'is'. That said, I would probably feel LESS safe if they didn't.
  • yes they do, it makes them feel safer
  • No they do not carry guns here, it does not make me feel unsafe.
  • Cops here carry guns. Guns are legal; the criminals have guns so the law enforcement has to have guns as well. Does it make me feel safer? Not especially. I mean, if cops had no guns and criminals had guns it could easily become utterly chaotic. Most cops know how to handle their firearms correctly and don't do stupid shit with them, but it's the other bit that worry me. Frankly, I'm just glad I'm not a minority. If I were a minority, I'd be paranoid around cops.
  • Yes they do. A few days ago an new law was voted so that people that work in private security can also carry guns (of course there are certain prerequisites). I feel rather neutral on the matter. On the other hand a gun can be proven vital for a police officer; they deal with people who do not hesitate to harm others.
  • I think police officers here routinely carry empty Krispy Kreme cartons. I don't know about safe but crime around here is perfectly timed with their sugar rushes.
  • I'm an Englishman living in Spain, so obviously the police in my home country don't carry guns as a matter of course and that fact has no bearing on whether or not I feel safe. In Spain there are three distinct police forces - the national police, who operate only in major cities; the civil guard who cover the rest of the country and the local police, who are employed directly by the local councils and whose duties include enforcing property planning regulations. All of them carry guns and it also has no bearing on how safe I feel. It seemed rather strange that the two uniformed men who called at my house to check whether I had planning consent for an extension I was building, were armed. In Britain that would have been a man in a suit, armed with nothing more dangerous than a briefcase.
  • In my experience, the fact that police carry guns is not only for my protection, but for theirs. When I worked for the Forest Service, there was a plea for the Rangers to be allowed to carry guns because the criminals they came upon had a bad habit of killing them. They were finally allowed to carry, and the Forest Ranger death rate went way down.
  • They carry guns, it doesn't really effect my safety, but I feel that they are much safer. Law enforcement has to go through training and get regular practice - so I don't worry about them having guns. But the idea that someone as clueless as me could buy a gun :o/ eek!
  • Yes, the cops carry firearms and I don't feel safe. I would prefer to carry my own firearm. Unfortunately, the cops take a dim view of that.
  • They carry guns, but no I don't feel particularly safer. :/
  • Last month in the county north of me, someone called the state police to check on the welfare of some guy. Supposedly when the police got there, they were met by a guy sporting a gun and the police shot him dead. That is the second time in Pennsylvania that i know of, that police shot someone, just because they had a gun. I think PA cops only want to be cops for the oportunity to kill anyone. And that appeared to be an opportunity, and they took it. The cops are on suspension right now because of suspicion.
  • They do. It makes me feel somewhat safer but not much. What makes me feel safest is when I carry.
  • I'm from Fiji and i can tell you now that if cops here crried guns the people would be so scard they'd kill themselves. Haha. I went on holiday to Malta where the average cop does not carry and i felt safer there than when i went to neighbouring Italy where cops (even wmn officrs) carry guns. I was not a fan of it because i know this: People say that only crims need fear armed police but in my experience in Fiji police are high school dropouts with tempers. Cases of brutality are severe. So we in Fiji fear an armed police force greatly.
  • yes they carry guns but it doesn't make me feel better. but I carry a gun, now that makes me feel better
  • Most don't although when in London near the houses of parliament they do for obvious reasons and I'm pretty much indifferent to it they aren't gonna shoot me so why would I be scared? Plus the fact that they have guns doesn't mean that I am gonna be much safer anyway so why would I feel safer?
  • Police officers? Hell! *I* routinely carry a gun! : D
  • Police officers, Customs officers and Fisheries officers all carry guns. I think it is over kill for the fish cops to carry guns. But as for Police, yes, I suppose it makes me feel safer. I am sure it makes them feel safer!
  • In Texas the uniformed police carry side arms, chemical weapons, and batons on their person. Frequently shotguns or assalt rifles in their car. The criminals can actually rent guns for an evening. A significant number of civilians have conceiled handgun permits after a one day course (lord knows how many don't bother with with license), The whole situation doesn't make me feel one bit safe but I just don't think about it much.
  • I know detectives routinely carry guns in all countries but not Fiji. Its a shame they don't when our armed offenders squads do because as i earler stated to the point. Fijian police are lazy dropouts with no academic background. They are not bright. But the equipment they have is greatly abused.
  • An armed, pimply-faced, self-righteous twenty-something does *not* make me feel "safe", no! ;-)
  • yes, they do carry guns but the don't really make me feel safer. now if they were guarding me 24/7 it would ;) lol! the chances of an officer being right there to protect you from an attack or robbery are slim. the best deterrent to crime is awareness and avoidance, not guns. just my opinion. i have nothing against guns, i fully support our right to carry/own them in the u.s, but i wont own one due to my own personal reasons i'd rather not divulge at this time.
  • Our local police do not carry guns. One can often hear the police shout out to armed criminals 'Stop or I will shout stop again''. I would feel safer if we had armed police. (Essex, England)
  • yes they do but it doesn t make me feel safe because they re realy clumsy and they can shoot you and don t even care about it
  • Yes, they carry guns. It makes THEM safer, and by extension, society is safer and by further extension I feel marginally safer in my person. Since I am ultimately responsible for my own safety, the police being armed makes little personal impact, unless one of them happens to be near if I am attacked. Of course, that means that I should be free to carry a concealed firearm.
  • yes, they all carry guns. yes, it makes me feel MUCH safer. If my home were invaded, I sure as heck wouldnt want them to show up and and have a talk with the bad guy while he kills me.
  • Yes. No. Because they've all got a collective 'itchy trigger finger'.
  • Police officers in the UK seem to manage fine without having to routinely carry guns.
  • Yes they do. No, especially when they sell them to criminals as was just discovered this week: http://www.wfsb.com/news/21158251/detail.html
