“Celebrities” are, like leather tanners, assistant-deputy abattoir managers, and chambermaids, have a place in society and provide a service that is useful at least to some. However, the slack-jawed mindless fascination the media instructs us to have for “celebrities” belies the fact that many of them offer nothing more than an attractive smile, or an augmented bust line. Therefore, those who adore “celebrities” might not have a very clear understanding of why they are “celebrities.” The celebrity status is self-perpetuating and ultimately meaningless no matter how fascinating.
