Tonic water was created for the plantation owners in India as a prevention for Malaria, that is why it contains quinine and has it's unique taste. It then became fashionable to drink it with gin, the popular drink of the time.

Quinine is a substance used to treat malaria - however the drink does not contain enough quinine to have any effect. The FDA allows up to 83 parts per million (PPM) of quinine to water. Nowadays Tonic Water contains the same amount sugar as most other flavored carbonated beverages. One of the most popular brands of tonic water in the USA is Canada Dry.
