  • Trapezium can mean a four-sided shape with two parallel sides, or simply an irregular four-sided shape. The area of a four-sided shape with parallel sides is equal to the average of the lengths of the parallel sides, multiplied by the distance between them. The area of an irregular four-sided shape depends on angles as well as sides. Divide the shape into two triangles with at least one known angle in each and use the sin and cosine rules to find the sides adjacent to the angle, and then use the triangle formula: area = (1/2) a b sin C Or if you have the coordinates of the points you can use the polygon formula: for each side AB of the shape compute AxBy - AyBx and sum the results.
