  • I don't think that there are any countries that are the epitome of anarchy. Anarchy, by definition, means without any form of government. Such situations don't generally last long. When you have a government collapse, some opportunist usually steps into the ensuing power vacuum fairly quickly. This person usually turns out to be someone with a tendency for dictatorial rule who can and does gather a group of bullies around him to enforce his dictates. Often there will be more than one such person who comes to power in such situations and these competing groups will fight each other for supremacy. So, anarchy doesn't really last very long because there are always people willing to take advantage of it to gain power and impose some kind of order on society. This leads to some very chaotic times as various groups fight for dominance, but it is not true anarchy because there is a form a government at work.
  • The most anarchic country at the moment is probably Somalia, which for the last fifteen years has been mainly controlled by individual warlords. There are now two different groups trying to control it: a weak government, supported by several outside countries including the US and neighbour Ethiopia, and a coalition of Islamic courts try to create an Islamic-based peace. Even so, they have to work with the warlords, trying to get them into a legal framework rather than throwing them out. The areas of Afghanistan not strongly under Western control are also pretty anarchic. Again, control is by local warlords. They may give lip-service to working for the central government, but in practice they do almost whatever they want.
  • Iraq ...the civil war and various sorts of insurgency and resistance fighting going on. The Sudan ...their civil war and intra-tribal fighting. Those are probably the top two, for now. swabby
  • Somalia. They haven't had any sort of functioning government for 20 years.
