Those people may have heard the words from another item, but the public got to know them as Hush Puppies starting with the slipper version that had a dog's head on the front and a short tail on the back. The store display rack said "Hush Puppies". A month or two later another display rack for the regular shoes announced "Hush Puppies", even though the regular shoes had been manufactured for a long time before. The slippers were the new product that introduced the name to the public.
