Magis were real (or at least, they really existed) - to my knowledge - wizards were mythical... Magi's studied astronomy and astrology and weather trends etc. They did not create spells etc.

In ancient Greece, the magi were a tribe from Media who were responsible for religious and funerary practices. In English, the term may refer to a shaman, sorcerer or wizard; it is the origin of the words magic and magician.
