Usually they're on the bottom on the transmission. You'll have to drop the pan though.

Ah Sorry but WRONG!!!! On the contour transmission the filter can only be replace during an overhaul....there is no lower pan on the transmission and the filter is internal.

Actually both answers (freaky yo and dochemi) are correct. On similar cars (such as the Taurus), the transmission filter is located inside the pan. It is replaceable, and should be replaced. On Contours the filter is not removable, and is actually a metal mesh filter that does not usually need to be replaced.
