Same reason through is promounced thru English is a lame language ~+~
-
Because break fast takes longer to say. We tend to relax pronunciation to make it easier.
-
...i pronounce it break-fast... just to be different... lol...and its cuz the english language is ment to confuze any one who tries to learn it, and to mess with our minds >_<
-
People were too intimidated to Break. Fast. Too early in the morning for that much pressure.
-
That's probably another word we Americans, butchered. Sorry!
-
IDK... I do know that it is supposed to be pronounced Break-Fast
-
Because the a in fast is pronounced as a schwa. The Schwa is common in the English language, and is the cause of much grief over correct spelling.
-
I pronounce it "Br'k-fst" As a usually over-caffeinated Yankee, I speak fast. The ' is the quickest way to get from the pursed-lip B, through the purring R, and right to the glottal hard K. Likewise, the omission of the A facilitates the quick transition from the tongue-on-lip F to the sibilant S and the terminal tongue-clicking T without opening the mouth for the AH sound. Properly done, you can say it with your jaw clenched.
-
It's "Break - fast". Break means to bring something to an end and fasting is to go without food for a period of time. After your evening meal and your nights sleep, your first meal of the day breaks your fast (It's has probably been 12 or so hours since you last had anything to eat). "Breakfast"

The pronounciation has evolved, but the spelling has not.
