Everyone was scared of commies. Containment was a military strategy, it didn't really cause the people to change their lives based on the idea of "containment". What chaged the people was the fear of atomic war, and suburbia, and new technology.

The Containment Policy was indeed a military policy but not exclusively. Economic aid to support countries and prevent them from falling to Communism was an equally important part of it. The Truman Doctrine, which provided economic aid to Greece and Turkey, is an example. Any changes in the social patterns of the U.S. would be only insofar as the affect of the prominence of the Cold War and heightened anti-Communist activities that the Containment Policy fostered. HUAC and McCarthy are often sited examples of an extreme affect, though HUAC did have some valid investigations.
