  • Salpetre, one of the ingredients of gunpowder, can be extracted from many sorts of animal dung. Human and dog have certainly been used, but bird droppings are a particularly good sources. The best know source of this sort is guano, the layers of seabird droppings left on certain isolated islands. But it would not surprise me if salpetre had also been extracted from pigeon droppings.
