Of the 50 states in the US. Alaska is the most northern state and Hawaii is the most southern. If you consider the continental US, Minnesota is the most northern (the little bump on top pushes it above the other states), and Florida is the most southern (the Florida Keys make is the most south).

Maryland tends to claim that distinction, although it seems to consider itself the northernmost southern state more than the southernmost northern state. However, I think that criteria could equally be applied to Kentucky, and Missouri. By the time the states further west were settled, the Civil War was over and the northern/southern distinction doesn't seem to apply so much.
