If it's addressed to you at the employer's address they can and do open it! You are on their time and using their mail/clerical services. It is legal and correct form.
-
Unless the mail is marked "Personal and Confidential" they have the right to screen all mail that has their address on it, regardless of who it is addressed to.
-
If that is true then does the company have to specify who has the authority and or have two people there to witness the opening as proof that nothing was taken out and or put in as incriminating evidence? Or can any manager open any mail addressed to an employee for any reason?

I understand you point about their rights to open it. I believe that if that is the case then there needs to be an authorized person to open the mail. My other question would be why are the opening it and what will be the result if something is found that they are not happy with? Could I be disciplined for something sent to me that I had no intent of receiving? Could I be disciplined if something was planted in the letter by a disgruntal manager that opened the mail? Shouldn't they be required to have two witnesses present when opening a mail to protect against theft and malicious intent. What if the person opening the mail is not authorized to view my 401 K plan information or my medical information or my social security number? My point is that even though I disagree with this invasion of privacy shouldn't there be procedures in place and authorized people who can verify what was in the mail. Furthermore, if the mail is opened then placed in my mail box in the open status anyone of my coworkers can look at the information without my knowledge.

http://counsel.net/chatboards/privacy/topic34/10.05.05.20.43.08.html looks like it is indeed legal...

Like everyone else said, they (your superiors) have the right to open your email or even see where you've been on the net using THEIR computer. The computer is company property and they have every right to know how it's been used. For this reason, I don't give out my email address to my friends/family and I try to keep everything professional. If someone forwards me jokes, etc., I don't open them unless I'm on my time and the jokes, pics, etc. are appropriate, which I find out from the sender. I won't even check my bank account or anything that has any personal information from work. I'll wait until I'm home.

Are you asking about an email or a post office letter?
-
This is a USPS postal mail addressed with my name and the address of the company I work at.
