No. It does not meet several criteria of an assault weapon, such as selective fire and detachable magazine. That's exactly the reason why SKS with detachable magazine are banned in US.

I believe an SKS is a sniper rifle. Probably about 5 rounds. A quick google search would give you the most accurate information.

No, it doesn't look like it. Assualt rifles have burst and/or full-auto firing mode -- this only has semi-auto. However, it looks like it later influeced the making of the soviet-made AK which is an assualt-rifle. I find this funny... "NEVER, under any circumstances, attempt to fire this weapon with the handguard-gas cylinder removed, or with a defective handguard latch! The gas port is angled to point directly toward the shooters face and severe injury will result from high pressure gas and flame. The handguard-gas cylinder must be firmly latched in place before firing."

well that would depend on what end of the barrel you are looking at - that itty-bitty opening makes a real impression on the target

Contrary to popular belief it is not a modern assault rifle. This is because it does not meet all of the criteria of a true assault rifle, though there are some variants that fall closer to the definition. It does not possess the capability for selective fire, and the basic design does not possess a removable magazine. Some selective-fire variants were produced in the PRC; however, the basic design of the SKS is semi-automatic in nature.
