I find Danny Boy an Irish pop song and far from traditional hard core Irish music. If the music does not include the bodran(drum) and the Irish bagpipe it is ,to me ,far from Irish traditional music.Listen to Planxty and Liam O'Flynn to hear real Irish music.

"Danny Boy" is not a traditional Irish song. Neither is "When Irish eyes are smiling." Both were written by englishmen(the horror for a true Irishman). Danny Boy was at least based on a trad Irish tune. Irish Eyes was written during the vaudeville days as an example of a traditional irish song, but it isnt. Good examples would be "The Wild Rover" as a drinking song or "The Boys of the Old Brigade" as a rebel song.
