I "want" to be rich! But first I "need" to rob a bank!

Not always. I do want what I need though.

Need has a physical benefit, want has a benefit on pleasure. Though many people use them in the wrong ways!

i need what i want

The word "want" comes from Old English meaning "lack". The word "need" comes from Old English meaning "requirement or necessity". Here's how I see the difference: I am a human, so I NEED food. I WANT steak. Wanting implies volition, or will, while our needs are intrinsic to being human - shelter, food, love. Of course one can argue what human "needs" are, opposed to that which is volitional.

Need - food, water, clothes and shelter. Want - everything else!
