That was because Calvin's parents had no name other than Mom and Dad so Uncle Max was written out after a week. Edit - Grandma Roses - Watterson didn't give Calvin's parents names so Uncle Max had no way of referring to them. As I said above he was the "Uncle" so couldn't refer to them as Mom and Dad.

Because he could not refer to the parents by name. As far as the strip is concerned, Calvin's parents are only known as mom and dad. Their names are never mentioned.
