  • That has traditionally not been required, in years past, the ritual of hat wearing by ladies was at times quite complicated, with the hats being pinned securely in place. You couldn't expect a lady to take off her hat anymore than suggest she loosen her corset to get comfortable.
  • No they don't. Nobody is required to. It's just considered proper. You should put your hand over your heart though but that's not required either.
  • Men generally remove their hats out of respect.Women never remove their hats for any reason.
  • Actually, it's more than just tradition. Federal law says men should remove their hats during the National Anthem: http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode36/usc_sec_36_00000301----000-.html Women were not required to remove their hats because their hats were often anchored to their head with hatpins, etc., or removing it would destroy an elaborate hairdo. Today, if a woman wears a casual or unisex hat (baseball cap, etc.), it's now considered good manners for her to also remove it.
  • Not by tradition. Only men had to.
  • Just men. As those hats come off easily.
