What does "quiet as a churchmouse" mean exactly? I've never seen any mice in my church!

I presume that, in the past, churches were quiet places, so a churchmouse had to be especially quiet... one would feel much happier in our church, though, coz we make lots of noise when praising the Lord. :-)

Actually I think the phrase is "POOR as a church mouse." A mouse that lives in a church doesn't get any accidentally dropped food. (There's a "quiet as a mouse" phrase also, but the mouse is generic.)
