  • It's very difficult for a lot of animals since humans are really the only animals who have to. Dogs or cats can figure out how to watch TV, and my parents' retriever mix has actually learned to look me in the eyes in a mirror. Gorillas have been known to paint meaningful (although somewhat abstract) art using relevant colours and shapes, as well as recognizing what they are watching on a television. Highly visual animals like birds will sometimes register a 2-d image but not understand that it is, in fact, 2-d. for example, they will see themself in a mirror and talk to their reflection thinking it is another bird. Sometimes they run around back to see the back of the mirror bird. :) So yes, animals can interpret images on a 2 dimensional plane, but it is largely a learned skill. however, it is a learned skill in human babies as well.
