Deer shed their antlers every year, and every year they grow back bigger. A "Spike Buck" as you know them, are newly matured deer. Some probably still have the last remnants of their spots. Next year, that same deer could have three or four points. What's great is walking the woods around summer time, and finding the shed antlers on the ground. They're beautiful, freshly polished and ready for mounting. And you didn't even have to kill a deer to get them.

Spikes are usually young deer with their first set of antlers. The nest year they will probably get to be a fork or maybe a little more.

A spike will develop a bigger rack over years if he is allowed to. If an area is over hunted this can be made difficult. A buck with a large rack got that way from being smart. That is why it is such a challenge and accomplishment to hunt these wonderful animals.
