What species was the Rancor monster in ROTJ?

Rancor was the species of that creature. In the book "The Courtship of Princess Leia", Luke and Company actually visit the planet from which it came. (No, it was not native to Tatooine.) There they discover that the Rancors are are actually quite intelligent and potentially friendly if treated with respect.

The planet is called Dathomir. Dathomirian Rancors are indeed partially intelligent. Dathomir is the only planet so far found that has a native population of Rancors, but it is not known if they originated there. If there are other planets in the Galaxy with native Rancors, they have yet to be discovered.
