  • Because we can! Who's going to stop us?
  • Because Denmark was so kind to sell us the US Virgin Islands, we feel the need to lease an Air Force Base in Greenland from them, to monitor actual and potential "over the pole" aircraft and missle activity. In the 1950's and 1960's, this was part of the DEW line (Defense Early Warning), when we were very concerned about the Soviets launching missles across the North Pole against the US and Canada.
  • Cause you know them Grennlanders are a real threat to liberty and there just might be a whole lotta oil underneath all of that ice.
  • There is an Airforce base that was used for stratigic nuke placement during the cold war. As I understand it now, there are limited strike abilities out of it, and it is used more as a stopping point (refuel) for long range missions of either cargo or fighters.
  • Better read more Emma if you really don't know that answer instead of hanging on here 24/7 posting your communist garbage and trolling the United States ever chance you get...Greenland is part of N.A.T.O. and they allow us to have bases in agreement to NATO's charter as part of NATO's military structure.....Communists like you don't like NATO, that's why you brought this up Emma..Try googling things Emma it's a wonder what you can find...Duhhhh
  • Because the US has military bases everywhere.
  • This answer is coming from someone who was stationed there. In the old days Thule was constructed to have a force to stop the russians incase they came over the north pole. There was Nike Nukes two of the silos are still standing and you can visit them when the water is frozen. There is approx 5-8 feet of ice in each silo. There was also Air Craft at Thule. A bomber crashed on the Ice Cap in the 50's that was carrying two nuclear missiles. The current mission of Thule Air Base is Space. There are four AF Squadrons there and an Air Force Group. There is the 821 Air Base Group, 821 Security Forces Squadron, 821 Support Squadron, 22 Space Ops Det 3 and the 12th Space Warning Sq. The Primary Mission for 22 Space Ops and 12 SWS is to protect and control a wide array of satalites we have orbiting the north poll. The 821 Support Sq and Security Forces squadrons primary missions are to support the two space squadrons. The Security Forces Sq is a typical Air Force Sq consisting of everything you would need to protect and enforce laws. The Support Squadron runs pretty much all of the facilities on base. I worked in the 821 Support Sq in the MSP (military support personnel) office. Thule AB is the worlds most isolated USAF Air Base. I enjoyed my time there and people are very close to one another. Thule at times can be one of the most dreadful places to live in other times it is the most beautiful place in the world.
  • becoz it's cheaper to have peolpe on the continat pay for your defence than to ship soilders across the ocean.
